Duterte's campaign has caused an international outcry, with human rights groups alleging widespread summary executions by police operating with impunity. "This is the fastest resolution of a case Centerlaw has ever handled," said Joel Butuyan, president of the lawyers' group handling the case at the Court of Appeals, which listened to two hours or oral arguments before deciding.

A Union flag flies next to the flag of the European Union in LondonMembers of Britain's upper house of parliament said on Friday they would try to attach conditions to legislation giving Prime Minister Theresa May the power to trigger the country's exit from the European Union. The upper chamber, the House of Lords, is due to begin debating the bill on Feb. 20. The fact the bill passed through the House of Commons without amendment has raised expectations it will enjoy an equally smooth passage in the unelected House of Lords, where May's Conservatives do not have a majority.

The information came in a letter from the Internal Affairs Ministry, responding to a Freedom of Information Act request, published by broadcaster RTL. A spokeswoman for the country's Electoral Council confirmed to Reuters that a sampling of names had been checked to verify they were those of registered voters, but not whether the signatures themselves were real.

An aerial view shows makeshift shelters at the Dagahaley camp in Dadaab, near the Kenya-Somalia border in Garissa CountyBy Humphrey Malalo NAIROBI (Reuters) - A Kenyan court said on Thursday it would be unconstitutional for the government to close a sprawling refugee camp housing mostly people who have fled unrest in neighbouring Somalia. Nairobi has vowed to shut Dadaab, once considered the world's largest refugee camp, because it says the complex has been used by Islamist militants from Somalia as a recruiting ground for a string of attacks on Kenyan soil. The government has dismissed that allegation.

The European Union country said on Monday that following investigations it was taking legal action against "unknown persons" over the EA 189 engine made by Volkswagen's (VW) Audi division. The engine, which was tested and certified by Luxembourg authorities, was used in most of the cars that VW has admitted in the United States included illegal "defeat device" software that could conceal the true level of toxic emissions in tests.

A Rohingya refugee woman walks out with a blanket and containers, distributed by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, at Kutupalang Unregistered Refugee Camp in Cox’s BazarBy Serajul Quadir and Simon Lewis DHAKA/YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar's government remains "in denial" about alleged atrocities by its military against minority Rohingya Muslims, officials present at a meeting in Bangladesh said, despite leader Aung San Suu Kyi's pledge to investigate the findings of a devastating U.N. report. The closed-door meeting of diplomats, government officials and international agencies in Dhaka follows a report last week from the United Nations human rights office that said soldiers committed mass killings and gang rapes in a "calculated policy of terror" in Myanmar's northwestern Rakhine State in recent months. "When Bangladesh cited the horrific acts by Myanmar's law enforcing agencies, the Myanmar representative did not agree with this and was in complete denial," said H.T. Imam, a political advisor to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was at the meeting.

The Nazi slogan "Arbeit macht frei" (Work sets you free) is pictured on the gate of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in OswiecimPoland has published the names of some 8,500 guards and commanders who worked at Auschwitz, as part of a government drive to remind the world the death camp was run and staffed by Germans. The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, has complained that some foreign media have referred to Auschwitz and similar camps set up in German-occupied Poland as “Polish concentration camps”, possibly giving the impression that Poland was a partner in crime of Adolf Hitler, rather than a victim.   The list of Auschwitz staff, published online by the government-affiliated Institute for National Remembrance (IPN), includes camp personnel's places of birth, service numbers, dates of arrival and departure and photographs.

The court was set up to make sure EU law was interpreted and enforced in the same way in all EU states - putting it at the heart of often hard-fought battles pitting the bloc against individual countries and companies.
